Subject: FW: Our Kick-Off event - BB/BS Holiday Party Dec 5th

Thank you everyone who has indicated an interest in supporting the Youth Outreach Program. This program exists to channel the volunteer spirit of you, our colleagues, into activities that encourage us to learn, share and grow together by making a difference in the lives of others. Kacey, Stephanie and myself have connected with Uptown Habitat, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Better Boys Foundation to develop relationships and identify opportunities to work together.

Currently we have approximately 40 volunteers committed to at least two events per year. We plan to sponsor 5-6 events in 2000. We will work with both Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Better Boys Foundation to structure these outings throughout the year. Our work with Uptown Habitat will take more time to develop as they currently have only one employee and one VISTA volunteer. However, it is our goal to sponsor at least one Habitat event towards the end of the year. We selected these organizations based upon their work with youth and the fact that we'd be building upon existing relationships of SYOP members. Therefore, if there is an organization that you'd like us to consider partnering with, please let us know and we'd be happy to make the call. Big Brother/Big Sister presents a special chance for us to befriend the 150+ children who are currently "unmatched" for a variety of reasons. In January we'll be distributing a draft schedule of outings with quarterly email letters to you about upcoming events and ideas.

In December we'll help staff the BB/BS Holiday Party. The party takes place at Famous Dave's Ribs & Blues on the 700 Block of Clark in the Loop from 12-3. The party consists of lunch and "Santa" (Dave Lund and Co) distributing gifts to the children. Our role will be to join the PUC (Program for Unmatched Children) group for lunch and share in the excitement as they open their gifts. Future events will be more exclusive to SYOP in which we'll be setting the agenda and activities. We're tentatively planning a "sports and crafts" outing at DePaul in the month of February which will be staffed exclusively by SYOP.

Please be advised that this first event IS on the afternoon of the Sachs Holiday Party (8-10am) so if the schedule does not work for you there will be plenty of opportunities to volunteer for an early yr. 2000 event instead. Please also let me know who is interested and available for the BB/BS Holiday party so we can get back to the program with a count. We look forward to celebrating this holiday season with excitement for our future and the lives of those we're about to touch through SYOP. Thanks
