What a wonderful day!!! Despite the cold and rain we had 15 volunteers participate in the Big Brother/Big Sister Holiday Party at Famous Dave's Ribs. If you missed it, you'll likely want to hear the "stories" from those who had the opportunity to make the holiday a little brighter for themselves and a special child. We befriended the "PUC-Program for Unmatched Children" giving them a chance to "belong" while they wait for a big brother or big sister to adopt them. Some of the children were quite shy and reserved (Patti, Terri, Kacey and Kari demonstrated unending patience and attention--thank god for crossword puzzles and tic-tac-toe!), others we'll remember as our "wild bunch" (Stephanie, Kurt and David especially had their hands full!), and some were just so happy to be part of the noise and energy (Brian and Kate, Kyle, Christine, and Illiana & girls had lots of fun with their "littles" and can't wait for the next event!).
We saw all kinds of important skills and talents in action ( distraction, patience, animation, handling disappointment (Steph- did Cordova ever get the gift he REALLY wanted?) perseverance, advocacy (You should have seen Patti in action when her littles got passed over for lollipops!) empathy and mentorship) making us better coworkers, parents, managers and friends.
I'll have the photos back and posted on the Intranet by week's end. Then I'll put the originals in your mailboxes. Some asked to send them to their little buddies- if you'd like your "little's" address please let me know and I'll get it from BB/BS. Thanks again for making the day special, giving us memories of making a difference this holiday season.
We're targeting our next event for February- more details to come soon.
