 Denhart House Information

This home was built in 1884 as a residence for Henry and Clara Denhart, he was a prominent banker in Washington.  In 1936 the home was purchased by Max E. White to be used as a residence and mortuary.  It operated under the name of White Funeral Home and later Mason White Funeral Home until 1999.  Walter and Joan Ruppman purchased the property on May 31, 1999, from Michael Malott.  A “Bare Bones” Open House was held on June 18, 1999. On July 24, 2001, 350 people attended a “Progress Reports” Open House. 

 

Changes made:

                         1.     Lead pipe and cast iron plumbing replaced with copper and plastic pipe

                         2.     Knob and tube electrical system modernized

                         3.     Fuse box replaced with circuit breakers

                         4.     Electrical service run underground and upgraded to 440

                         5.     1959 furnace replaced with a geothermal system

                         6.     Concrete parking lot 275’x 65’ removed

                         7.     65 truck loads of dirt brought in to create a side yard

                         8.     A four car steel garage replaced with carriage house

                         9.     Brick driveway constructed

                     10.     Freight elevator removed and back staircase built

                     11.     Original newel post, banister, and spindles re-installed at top of back staircase

                     12.     Original cabinet with flour bin rebuilt (parts found in basement and Mr. White’s shed)

                     13.     Laundry chute added

                     14.     Original kitchen floor refinished, after carpet and linoleum were removed

                     15.     Kitchen chimney removed to create wall space for stove

                     16.     Kitchen cabinets and appliances added

                     17.     Entire house insulated

                     18.     Master bath and closets added to room that had been a storage area when the house was first built.  At some point it had been enlarged and used as a kitchen and later as a preparation room.

                     19.     Family bath refinished with period fixtures.  Originally there was no indoor bath area.

                     20.     Dining room and library hardwood floors refinished

                     21.     Bathroom installed on first floor

                     22.     Bathroom added in basement

                     23.     Three chimneys rebuilt and insulated

                     24.     Center dormer added to match original structure

                     25.     Roof shingled and interior gutters rebuilt

                     26.     Period wallpaper

                     27.     Invisible storm windows and screens on one forth of the windows

                     28.     Exterior siding partially removed

                     29.     North side of house painted

                     30.     Gingerbread to be added to exterior

 

 

Under construction:

                         1.     Back porch to be rebuilt, new steps have been added

                         2.     Carpeting of floors

                         3.     Main stairs to second floor to be refinished and carpet runner added

                         4.     Complete wallpapering

                         5.     Landscaping

 

For the future:

1        Front steps to be replaced

2        Remainder of siding to be removed and exterior painted, gingerbread added

3        Invisible storm windows and screens on remaining windows

4        Wood screen door to replace storm doors on remainder of house
